چکیده

The chemical nature of the non-specific hyaluronidase inhibitor normally present in blood serum has not been elucidated, but quinoid and hydroquinoid compounds have been found to be most effective inhibitors of the depolymerization of hyaluronic acid by hyaluronidase in vitro (1, 2). Other researches have suggested that intermediate metabolites of reduced or oxidized quinoid type may appear in blood and urine during intense salicylate therapy, alkaptonuria, and incomplete tyrosine metabolism associated with ascorbic acid deficiency (2-7). The latter condition in guinea pigs was also marked by increased serum methemoglobin and the excretion of bepzoquinone acetic acid in the urine (3). Since the presence of quinoid substances in serum and urine has not been correlated with the concentration of hyaluronidase inhibitor, these measurements have been undertaken.

1. Studies On Carbohydrate MetabolislD In Scorbutic Guinea Pigs. s. BANERJEE. CALCUTTA Scurvy is associated with disturbance in carbohydrate metabolism. In scurvy diminished glucose tolerance has been reported in many species of animals. Banerjee and Ghosh observed a decreased liver and muscle hexokinase activity in scurvy. The decreased turnover rate of phosphorelated intermediates of carbohyd...

Ascorbic acid is essential for the release of insulin from scorbutic guinea pig pancreatic islets.

Pancreatic islets from young normal and scorbutic male guinea pigs were examined for their ability to release insulin when stimulated with elevated D-glucose. Islets from normal guinea pigs released insulin in a D-glucose-dependent manner showing a rapid initial secretion phase and three secondary secretion waves during a 120-min period. Islets from scorbutic guinea pigs failed to release insul...

Effect of scurvy on cholesterol and ascorbic acid in guinea pig adrenals.

It has been shown earlier (1) that the metabolism of carbohydrate is disturbed in scorbutic guinea pigs as evidenced by diminished glucose tolerance, deposition of liver glycogen, and insulin content of the pancreas. Although the adrenalin content of the adrenals of scorbutic guinea pigs is increased, it has been shown by removing the adrenal medulla that adrenalin is not responsible for the lo...

Elevation of alcohol dehydrogenase activity in the subclinically scorbutic guinea-pig.

1. Because it has been shown that a majority of alcoholics are subclinically scorbutic, the metabolism of ethanol was studied in subclinically-scorbutic guinea-pigs. 2. Hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase activity was raised maximally by ethanol within 2 days. 3. In twenty-three subclinically-scorbutic guinea-pigs fed ethanol for 2 weeks, the alcohol dehydrogenase activity (& SD) was 11.5 +_ 1.2 unit...

Relation of Scurvy to the Adrenalin Content of the Adrenal Glands of Guinea Pigs

It has been reported from this laboratory (1) that a deficiency of vitamin C in guinea pigs leads to changes in carbohydrate metabolism, as evidenced by glycosuria, a diabetic type of the glucose tolerance curve, and depletion of the glycogen content of the liver. We have also found that there is a fall in the insulin content of the pancreas (2), an increase in the size and also the number of i...
